One of the questions that most torment Christians is whether they have committed the unforgivable sin. This question is legit, and the lack of an answer can lead to prolonged suffering for a Christian, as it has done for me.
Firstly, it is important to understand that God is merciful, faithful and just. In short, God is good, and in His Word, God teaches us that if we confess our sins, He will forgive us.
At the same time, God presents a type of sin that will never be forgiven.
But what is this unforgivable sin, anyway? It is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.
Mark 3:28,29
²⁸ Verily I say unto you, all sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and all manner of blasphemies, whereby they blaspheme;
²⁹ But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, but is guilty of eternal judgement.
In these bible verses, we see that Jesus says that all sins will be forgiven, except those who blaspheme against the Holy Spirit.
What is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit?
Well, based on the context of the passage, blaspheming against the Holy Spirit is the continued and deliberate rejection of the Holy Spirit’s work in convicting each person to repentance.
In other words, the continuous rejection of the grace and opportunity for repentance given by Almighty God to each one of us.
In the biblical context, we see in Mark 3 that the same scribes who had witnessed Jesus’ miracles and knew (because they knew the Word) that Jesus was the Messiah and the Son of God, refused to admit it and bow down publicly before Jesus, falsely accusing him of being possessed by the devil, thus denying and rejecting all the work of the Holy Spirit, casting him out and committing the unforgivable sin.
Have I blasphemed against the Holy Spirit?
If you feel like repenting for your sins and you are afraid of having committed this sin, then you certainly did not commit it! For you would in no way feel like repenting if the Holy Spirit were not already in you!
Regardless of what you have done, seize the call to repentance and change your ways! There is always hope, and Jesus is waiting with open arms! All you have to do is ask for forgiveness and return to Him.
